Lionel Messi is seen by many as the greatest football player to grace the game, setting new records seemingly by the week while winning every major club honour there is to win – all at one club.
One of the most recognisable faces on the planet, Messi could be forgiven for letting the football fame get to his head ever so slightly, but it appears he has remained true to his humble beginnings.
Messi’s talent has lit up European football for well over a decade and a half, and is a nailed on certainty to be in the conversation surrounding the best to ever do it when the sad day that he decides to hang up his boots eventually comes.
At the age of 33, that day may be creeping closer and while many players who can see the end of the career coming may opt for a few victory laps round the MLS or the Chinese Super League, Messi remains committed to playing at the highest level and more importantly – letting his skill do the talking, the Argentine is carefree over how others choose to discuss his legacy.
In an interview with Unisport about how he will be remembered, the Argentine superstar said: “In the end, everyone will remember and think of you what they want – and they’re free to do so.”
While Messi seems relatively unbothered by how other’s perceive him, his answer was in stark contrast to his Portuguese counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking at his unveiling as LiveScore’s Official Global Brand Ambassador, Ronaldo was asked about how he wants to be remembered and made no secret of his desire.
He said: “I hope that I will be remembered as one of the great players, someone that worked hard, that always did his best to help his team and will be part of the history of the game.”
The Barca captain remained humble when asked about his six Balon D’or titles, simply explaining: “Well, I don’t think I’ve done anything decisive to achieve success or win titles. It comes when God decides and chooses, there’s no fixed time.”
Both Messi and Ronaldo have spent years being compared to one another, and their attitude towards their legacy seems another area where there is a subtle difference in their make-up.
