Health Minister Patty Hajdu has a new deputy director of communications: Andrew MacKendrick took on that role on July 5 after leaving a communications-planning position in the Prime Minister’s Office.
MacKendrick previously worked as the press secretary for the Health minister from 2015-17. Since then, he has also worked for the minister for Indigenous Services, in 2018-19, and in Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson’s office in 2019.
MacKendrick told iPolitics he is excited to be returning to the minister of Health’s office, noting that it “plays such an important role across government in managing the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Joshua Swift became the special assistant for legislative affairs and policy at Infrastructure and Communities Minister Catherine McKenna’s office in May. Swift took on the role following an environment-focussed parliamentary internship run by GreenPAC. He was also previously a field organizer with Green Corps.
Swift said it is a particular honour to serve in McKenna’s office “during a critical time for infrastructure investments as we build back better” from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Julie DeWolfe left a position as director of caucus services and operations at the Liberal Research Bureau to begin working as a senior consultant at Toronto-based communications firm gt&co beginning on June 14.
“I look forward to supporting our clients at gt&co in advising and connecting with the federal government in a meaningful and impactful way, in the same way I supported caucus members and staff in achieving their goals at the local level” DeWolfe said.
Linda Campbell will replace DeWolfe in the Liberal Research Bureau, according to DeWolfe. Campbell worked recently as director of operations and outreach for Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault.
Tisha Ashton left her post as senior adviser and director of parliamentary affairs to the Minister Innovation, Science and Industry François-Phillippe Champagne in June, joining Ottawa-based public affairs agency Compass Rose as a public affairs counsellor. Among other previous roles, Ashton worked as director of policy and acting chief of staff to the president of the Treasury Board in 2015–19.
