The New York Mets needed a fortunate landing and bounce to escape Sunday night with a game and series win over the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies.
That victory has the Mets sharing the division lead with the Washington Nationals via winning percentage at the start of the first full week of May, but only one of those clubs is the betting favorite to win the National League East crown when all is said and done.
BetOnline.ag lists the Mets as the favorites to win the division at +120. The Atlanta Braves, two games back of New York and Washington in the standings, are second on the list at +250. Philadelphia is one game back and at +400. The Nationals are the best value among the five clubs at +575, while the Miami Marlins are 2.5 games back but are +5000.
These lines were announced less than 24 hours after Philadelphia’s Rhys Hoskins thought he hit a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Mets. That decision was overturned, however, after it was determined the ball struck an in-play outfield railing before it bounced back onto the field.
