New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has rejected suggestions of double standards in imposing harsher restrictions on residents in western and south-west Sydney as it is her “job” to protect the community from COVID-19.
Data revealed on Tuesday showed hotspot suburbs were among the highest vaccinated areas in NSW with close to 88 per cent of residents in Blacktown having received at least one dose.
“I experience, as well as our team, the day-to-day distress and trauma of people losing loved ones, of people ending up in hospital very sick for weeks and weeks,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“Our intention from day one has been to prevent death and to prevent hospitalisation and to support communities in as safe a way as possible
“Every decision we take is to support our communities, to protect people’s lives and to allow us onto that path of freedom.
“I’d rather this conversation than a conversation about why we failed communities.”
