The former reality TV star at the centre of the Michael Owen sex text scandal has admitted she “shouldn’t have done that” after details of their phone relationship emerged.
One time Big Brother contestant Rebecca Jane was sent a barrage of texts by ex-Liverpool and England striker Owen, who has been married to childhood sweetheart Louise since 2005.
Among the messages, revealed exclusively by the Mirror last month, Owen pleaded with Rebecca to send him 20 topless pictures, suggesting he would “judge them”.
Owen also urged her to “leave nothing to the imagination”, while also suggesting they should meet up at a horse racing event, while also asking whether her breasts were “falsies”.
Rebecca revealed the details of their sordid exchanges over text, but has now explained her remorse at interacting with a married man.
“When things became a little more serious, I backed out. I made a catalogue of errors in this whole situation,” Rebecca wrote in the Burnley Express.
“I sent photographs to a married man. I shouldn’t have done that. I should have kept communications platonic.
“I’ve heard a lot of people tell me over the past couple of weeks that ‘you were the single one, it wasn’t your responsibility’.
“I think in my subconscious I believed that too, at the time. Looking at it now, I had a moral duty to just be a decent person and not cross that line with someone who is married.
“But ultimately, I should have kept the communication between ourselves, because speaking to other people led to the story ending up on the front of a national newspaper.”
BT Sport pundit Owen is first claimed to have followed Rebecca on Twitter back in March before they began contacting each other.
Rebecca has appeared regularly on ITV breakfast show This Morning, following her stint on reality show Big Brother back in 2017.
In one of Owen’s texts, he is alleged to have said: “Come on then, fire them through. It’s a long boring trip to London so I need something to do… leave nothing to the imagination.
“And I’ll advise on the suitability of them for social media – hopefully none of them are suitable.”
After receiving replies from Rebecca, Owen is claimed to have viewed one of her pictures 65 times, stating his approval by texting: “Tremendous by the way.”
After another, he wrote back: “Well you went straight in there with a pic of your t**s so there’s no point taking a back step now. Hmmm. Not bad. Great t**. Definitely a no-go for social media.”
The 41-year-old has previously described “staring into the abyss” of divorce in 2014, but said in his autobiography Reboot – My Life, My Time, that he was a “different man” after undergoing marriage counselling with wife Louise.
He said: “Now that my life-changing liaison with the idea of splitting up with Louise and the family in 2014 has passed, I’m pretty sure everyone who knows me will say that I’m now a completely different person – in the best possible way.”
Mirror Football have contacted Owen’s representatives for comment.
