Sergio Busquets has been sent to hospital for tests after suffering a sickening head injury during Barcelona’s draw with Atletico Madrid.
The Barca midfielder was forced out of the game after just 26 minutes, when he clashed heads with Stefan Savic.
After receiving lengthy treatment, Busquets attempted to continue before being replaced by Ilaix Moriba.
Marca report that the Spain international has suffered a ‘facial contusion and an upper jaw fissure’.
Busquets instantly had a bloody nose from the collision and came back onto the pitch once the bleeding had been stopped.
However, it is claimed the Spaniard quickly became dizzy and had to be replaced less than two minutes later.
After further examinations in the dressing room, it was then decided he would visit hospital in order to go under further testing.
The report suggests that the outlook for Busquets is positive and there is a possibility he could be available for their next fixture, although it is likely he would be forced to wear a mask.
This season, has seen the introduction of concussion substitutes after Wolves striker Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull earlier in the season.
Jimenez’s injury came after a clash of heads with Arsenal defender David Luiz. The Gunners were subsequently criticised for their treatment of the centre-back after he continued to play, despite blood pouring from the head wound.
As for Barcelona, they missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders Atletico on a frustrating afternoon for their title hopes.
Atleti now know that if they win their final three games of the season, they will topple Barca and Real Madrid for the second time under Diego Simeone.
The hosts thought they had scored the all-important winner in the closing stages when Ronald Arauho headed past Jan Oblak.
However, the joy was short-lived when the referee’s assistant correctly flagged the goal for offside.
